Love It: Audrey Hepburn Playing Golf

28 Jun

After seeing this, I’m determined to try to channel my inner Audrey in every round — especially when it gets rough. The bare feet, big smile, and “why the hell wouldn’t I carry an umbrella why I play golf — I’m Audrey Freaking Hepburn, I do what I want,” attitude will hopefully be a great way to stay upbeat on the course!

15-year-old Pro Alexis Thompson Signs With Puma

24 Jun

Alexis Thompson is the LPGA’s youngest pro at 15, and she just signed on with COBRA-PUMA golf. It’s ok if you’re a little jealous, I know I am… By the time she’s my age maybe I’ll be half as good.

Cobra was acquired by PUMA earlier this year, and Thompson is the first endorsement under the new joint brand. The merger creates a brand that is kinda hard to roll off the tongue, and I don’t understand why PUMA insists on all-caps. Calm down, por favor… Regardless, I really like the PUMA clothing line and am interested in how Thompson does in her first US Open this July.

Golf Rocking Chair?

23 Jun

Ok, so someone’s finally found a use for those sets of ancient golf clubs laying about at garage sale…

Uncommon Goods (which has tons of crazy stuff I love), has a series of sports-inspired rocking chairs, hand-made  out of reclaimed materials and cedar in Massachusetts. I think it’s great — not necessarily something I would ever put in my house, but maybe if I were given the task of decorating a man cave or something… I wonder if it’s even comfortable?

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 Commercial

22 Jun

I’m kinda tickled by this commercial for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 video game. I’m not into video games very much myself — in fact, the one time I tried to play this game in college I got mocked with the “Aren’t you supposed to be good at golf?” kind of jabs. Same thing whenever I play Wii Golf. But I digress. Here’s the commercial!

Watch the US Open Live Online!

18 Jun

GOOD GOD, Pebble Beach is beautiful, isn’t it? I’m not going to lie, I’m kinda more excited about the course than the players. Want to see all the action but can’t since you’re at work, or your TV is monopolized by the watching of Food Network by family or roommates?

Well, head on over to USOpen.Com, where you can see live streaming video of the round… and the beautiful course!

Five Father’s Day Gift Ideas: I’m determined not to get him a cliche golf tie

15 Jun

Growing up, my siblings and I assumed this about my father:

Premise 1: Men like golf.

Premise 2: Dad is a man.

Conclusion: Dad likes to receive golf-related things for Christmas, his birthday, and Father’s Day.

Thus, as we grew up it seemed a no-brainer to get Dad something with a golf ball on it. These days, while he doesn’t get to play as much as he used to, the gift of golf is still a safe bet when it comes to gifts for him. The trick is to find novel-but-useful items he will actually get regular use out of both on and off the course, rather than random knick-knacks that will just clutter. Here are some things I’m thinking of getting him this year:

Those Who Can’t Do…

8 Jun

Those who know my playing ability were a little bit skeptical when they learned I was offered the opportunity to coach the varsity and junior high boys and girls teams from my old high school. Admittedly, I’ve always been a bit humble about my skills, and rightfully so. There are a million stupid excuses I have for why I don’t play like I think I “should,” like free time to practice, access to a course, money to pay for it, equipment, the weather, not having a clean collared shirt… But even though coaching meant I didn’t to get hold a club for longer than two seconds, I can guarantee that telling someone how to play golf has been the best practice of my life.

It’s In The Bag

4 Jun

Well, it’s officially been a year since I wrapped up my college golf career. And while my team let me keep the bag, and I love it dearly, part of me thinks it’s time to move on. Especially since our colors are black and orange — not really in my color palette!

My new bag will need to meet a few criteria:

1. Lightweight — carts are nice, but walking burns over 1000 calories! So I need a bag that won’t weigh too much before the weight of clubs, balls, and everything else it seems I can cram in.

2. Pockets — Ok, so I know I just bitched about how I carry too much, but pockets are a must! I am also a bit picky about where the pockets are placed, since I can’t tell you how many times I have held up a whole group searching all over my bag for tees, divot repairs, etc.

3. Style — cute, but not kitschy. I’m in no financial position to switch out my bags at a whim (we’ll get to that next), so I need a bag that will stay cute for a few years at least. Something sleek, feminine and fun.

4. Price — Since I’ve always played golf through school, I had no idea just how expensive a golf bag can be. The only one I’ve ever bought (and it was my dad who purchased it for me) came with the starter set. I don’t know why it shocked me so much, since I’ve always known golf was expensive. So I’m looking at spending no more than $100 — and if I get to that upper limit, it better be a damn good bag.

Now that we’ve laid the ground rules, here are some I’ve found:
